Product Description

“The Varina's 5 O'clock Tea” is a hand painted ceramic teapot that reinterprets one of the most emblematic figures in Portugal – The Varina (The Fishwife). These wonderfully sculpted teapots are made in the town of Caldas de Rainha in central Portugal by the design studio Laboratório d’Estórias (Laboratory of Stories). Each piece is created around a folk tale or myth. “The Varina's 5 O'clock Tea” tell us the story of 5 fishwives that gathered for five o’clock tea, following the teachings and memories of Catarina of Braganza, the Portuguese Queen who introduced the habit of drinking tea in England. Storytellers

Ceramics with a story

In this laboratory, even the technique reveals a story — and this one starts at the beginning of the 19th century when “Maria dos Cacos”, using only her hands, became the first of a long tradition of potters from Caldas da Rainha.

Her ancient techniques are a story that is threatened to get lost forever. And it’s in this attempt to preserve this knowledge that Laboratório d’Estórias finds a reason to exist, recovering and valuing the painting techniques of the end of the 19th century and the vast tradition of manual techniques from Caldas da Rainha.

Laboratório d’Estórias

Laboratório d’Estórias came to life through the hands of Rute Rosa and Sergio Vieira. In common, they have the place where they studied design – ESAD, in Caldas da Rainha – but more than that, a desire to tell stories through objects, allying Rute passion for ceramics to the Sérgio talent for the development of original products.
