The ceramic swallow (Andorinha) is today an icon of national folklore and an object present in Portuguese homes throughout the country. It is used both outdoors and indoors to decorate walls. As these migratory birds always seek to build their nest in the same place, they became a symbol of Family and Home. They also have a single partner during their entire life, and therefore also stand for Love, Loyalty and Faithfulness.
Our ceramic swallows are entirely handmade and hand painted by a talented family of artisans in Alcobaça, a town known for making ceramic for hundreds of years. They will add some colorful style and Portuguese flair to your home décor with a floral design inspired by the traditional Viana embroidery, which pays tribute to the young couples that secretly embroidered a handkerchief with messages of love during an era when modesty was enforced strictly.
