Product Description

Embark on a journey of art and tradition with our Handcrafted Medusa and Basil Ceramic Plant, a unique piece that blends Portuguese craftsmanship and timeless storytelling. This artisanal creation is a celebration of culture, featuring a terracotta vase, a bell-shaped basil (manjerico) in green glazed faience, and a vivid handmade paper carnation.

As an ode to Portuguese literary heritage, the beautiful gift box includes a poetic excerpt from the tale "A Medusa e o Manjerico" by Fernando Pessoa, elegantly summarized in both Portuguese and English. This enchanting story weaves the narrative of Perseus, a hero captivated by the legendary Medusa with serpent-like hair, whose gaze transforms all it touches into stone.

The inner sanctum of the vase holds a small bag of basil seeds, a nod to one of Portugal's cherished traditions during the popular saints' festivities.

In the realm of Portuguese symbolism, the manjerico holds special significance. Originating from the Middle East, it found a home in Portugal during the popular saints' celebrations in June. Greeks welcome it at their doors, Indians revere it as sacred, and it carries medicinal properties in Middle Eastern countries.

Ceramics with a story

In this laboratory, even the technique reveals a story — and this one starts at the beginning of the 19th century when “Maria dos Cacos”, using only her hands, became the first of a long tradition of potters from Caldas da Rainha.

Her ancient techniques are a story that is threatened to get lost forever. And it’s in this attempt to preserve this knowledge that Laboratório d’Estórias finds a reason to exist, recovering and valuing the painting techniques of the end of the 19th century and the vast tradition of manual techniques from Caldas da Rainha.

Laboratório d’Estórias

Laboratório d’Estórias came to life through the hands of Rute Rosa and Sergio Vieira. In common, they have the place where they studied design – ESAD, in Caldas da Rainha – but more than that, a desire to tell stories through objects, allying Rute passion for ceramics to the Sérgio talent for the development of original products.
