Product Description

Bring a piece of Portugal’s rich cultural history into your home with this Decorative Hand-Painted Portuguese Ceramic Tile by master ceramists Amélia and José Sá Nogueira. These artisans, among the most respected in Portugal, also produce restoration pieces for historic sites, museums, and palaces.

Each tile is meticulously handmade and hand-painted in the traditional workshop style of Caldas da Rainha, using centuries-old techniques and inspired by Moorish and Spanish designs dating back to the 1500s. Measuring 5.5” x 5.5”, this embossed ceramic tile bursts with vibrant color and intricate detail, reflecting the timeless charm of Portugal’s iconic azulejos.

These tiles are as functional as they are beautiful. Use them to create a backsplash, decorate a wall, cover a tabletop, or simply display them individually as works of art. Each tile comes with a removable wall hanger, making it easy to showcase right out of the box. Please note: These tiles are not suitable for flooring.

Whether for your own home or as a gift, this handcrafted piece is more than a decoration—it’s a symbol of Portugal’s heritage and a tribute to its enduring artistry.

keeping tradition alive

Tiles are a fixture of culture and design in many parts of Portugal, and you will even find them on famous buildings like the São Bento Railway Station in Porto.

Even though tiles are originally from Egypt, they were first brought to Portugal by the Arabs, in the 13th century. However, it was in the XVI century that King D. Manuel really introduced the azulejos to Portugal. They were imported from Seville after the King’s visit to Spain. It is said that he was so enchanted by these tiles, that he had to bring some to decorate the National Palace of Sintra.

We Are Portugal proudly partnered with one of the most recognized contemporary artists, that keep producing this unique form of art, using the same techniques of the XVI century and bring them to you.
